So hard to explain anime to people. They always say “but its a cartoon” my reply is always “HA! I KNEW YOU WERE GONNA SAY THAT BEFORE YOU EVEN SAID IT! >:D But anways…”
Yeah its a cartoon, but its art. Anime, cartoon = animation. All art. This is just more for an older audience
and with way better plots and characters than the crap on the tv these days.If I may put in my two cents… a “cartoon” is something like Bugs Bunny, the characters are completely unrealistic looking, and completely simplified.
Something like Elfen Lied or other anime shows is an “Animated Series”. The characters are exaggerated, yes, but still mostly realistic and the plots are meant to be taken more seriously.

Then, with your definitions, what would you call shows like Code Lyoko or Sym-Bionic Titan? The artwork certainly isn’t anywhere near realistic, but the plots are much more serious than cutesy or funny.

I haven’t seen Sym-Bionic Titan yet, sorry XD But Code Lyoko is definitely an animated series. It’s more stylized, but the plot is still taken seriously.
